Nowadays, a significant part of professional communication takes place on the Internet, and network etiquette is responsible for the comfort and accuracy of online interaction.
Netiquette serves as a guide to determine the adequacy and relevance of virtual behavior.
So that you won’t be misunderstood and mistreated, take these few points into consideration:
- First, when completing application forms or filling in any other type of documentation, make sure to follow the given instructions and adhere to the required format. Take the online procedures seriously and provide full information right from the start. Moreover, submit the data to the specified person and do not bombard him/her with multiple copies.
- Second, e-communication does not assume slipshod style, so watch the grammar, spelling and punctuation of your digital messages. Beware of using emoticons or customary abbreviations, and keep to the normal sentence case of uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Third, make certain that your virus protection software is up-to-date. Safe e-mailing seems to be an obvious requirement, but very often it is neglected by the users. Another evident principle is following the copyright laws; however, piracy is detected on the web every now and then.
- Fourth, if you decide to involve in a specialized discussion group or a professional association, make sure you truly understand the substance and the purpose of that online social network. Learn the community rules, read the archives if they are available, and observe–the more the better.
- And last, show respect and tolerance in all your inquiries and responses, be attentive and don’t ignore–courtesy and tactfulness are indeed the most essential components of professional online etiquette.
