2007, was a dark year for many antivirus companies. Due to several concentrated virus attacks worldwide, they did many studies on different antivirus software companies and the results were dismal. The computer magazine C’t found that in 2006, many antivirus software companies only had a success rate of 40-60% against certain viruses, and that in 2007 this number has dropped to 20-30%. The lone antivirus program to score higher was ESET NOD32, which was 63% successful. Before this, few Westerners heard of this tiny Slovakian company, but afterwards many were proclaiming ESET NOD32 one of the best antivirus software protection systems currently available, I among them.

Fast forward to 2011 and the ESET NOD32 is still at the top of its game. The Anti-Virus Comparative Group did a recent study in late 2010 to compare and contrast different antivirus programs. Thankfully, the overall results were quite high, as all scored over 80% success rates, though no program was 100% successful. Buyers and users of any antivirus program need to keep this in mind. However, many did score 97% or higher, ESET among them. ESET listed as having a 97.7% detection rate, with only three false alarms. Contrast this with McAfee, who had a 98.9% detection rate, but also had over 60 false alarms. You cannot expect customers to know if it is a false alarm or if a real alarm is the problem, just because their software says it is real. Another factor to consider is that while some programs scored very high while the computer linked to the Internet, due to their in-the-cloud technology, these results did not hold up while the computer disconnected to the Internet. In many cases, these detection results fell several percentage points. No matter if, the computer was online or offline the ESET NOD 32 antivirus program results held steady. Taking its high detection rate with its low false alarm rate and it is easy to see why the ESET NOD 32 is one of the best antivirus software programs available.
